New Nightmares

Thursday, March 9th, 2006

I heard a track from the new Nightmares On Wax record the other night on FBI Sunsets – I think it was the guys from Funk Trust – and it’s definitely enough to pique my curiosity.

Listen while playing speaker box tetris at the NOW website.

Last night was the first run for my new show on FBI. Playing cool music and talking about it at length might be my idea of heaven, I think – though it could be a whole lot better with a bit of preparation – moving house, new job in the same couple of weeks. Next week should be better, hopefully I’ll have new things from TV On The Radio, Matmos and Ghostly International…

This week’s show ended up loosely Scandinavian – loads of Norwegian punk jazz and electropop, some Swedish punk, no hip hop though, and links outtascandi to Sonic Youth, Subs, New Buffalo, Mike Patton and even You Am I, a couple of Aussies over there too (Upshot, Lake Lustre). Thanks to everyone who called or sent emails (amazingly noone that I know, not even my mum).

Spdfgh – Give Me Time
New Buffalo – Just a Little Time
The (International) Noise Conspiracy – Baby Doll
Subs – 8 o’clock
Upshot – Money
Bonk – Front Page
The Thing – Art Star
Lake Luster – Closure
Datarock – Maybelline
Sereena Maneesh – Candle Lighted
Velvet Underground – Femme Fatale
Sir Dupermann – Samlefamie
Shining – Goretex Weather Report
Jaga Jazzist – Plym
Pivot – Montecore
Kid 606 – Phoenix Riddim
Kaada/Patton – Seule
Mats Gustafsson/Sonic Youth – Hidros 9
Lee Ranaldo – Secret Meeting
The Follow – Smashed Heart
You Am I – Adam’s Ribs
Moha! – C8
Hanne Hukkelberg – Ease

My new show starts on FBI this Tuesday night. There’s no podcast/stream as yet, though apparently the station is working on it. Probably best, considering it’s my first show in a while (aside from sitting in on Tuesday lunches for a while). Anyway the idea is a kinda music history show, as thematic or six-degrees-of-separation as I want it to be on a given Tuesday.

If you’re in Sydney, tune in 9 until 11pm and let me know what you think.
