Perhaps you might want to look at the French anthropologist (and seminal structuralist) Andre Leroi-Gourhan and his work 'Gesture and Speech'. The first part of this book 'Technics and Language' puts forward a powerful argument linking the underlying mechanisms of language and technology. It's not well know in the Anglosphere despite being written in the late 1950s and 1960s as it wasn't translated from the French until 1990.
