There is no such thing as permission to link. It’s certainly good netiquette under certain circumstances to request permission before linking (e.g. an entry in someone’s personal LJ, an academic paper) but one can’t withhold permission to link to a freely-available resource on the net, whatever RealTime or many other organisations might think.
Must add, boy Jon Dale’s writing pisses me off. I don’t doubt his erudition, but he needs to lose the po-mo crap and write more about music than Theory. Now I have to read him every month in Wire, and he’s worse than the older Wire writers ;)
