Backgrounder

April 27th, 2008

I live in Sydney, Australia. I’m a writer, editor, broadcaster and (sometimes) DJ.

I started this blog in July 2004 with no clear idea where it was headed. It still changes direction from time to time, but it’s helped me connect with loads of like-minded people in Australia and elsewhere. It’s also been a first draft on ideas that I’ve ended up publishing elsewhere.

I also edit the print/online music magazine Cyclic Defrost. I’ve edited magazines for Reed Elsevier. My writing (on music, science, books and other things) has been published in Oyster, Artlines, Nylon, The Canberra Times, Spinach7, stylusmagazine.com, inthemix.com.au, Hot Press, Riot, Ecos, Mess + Noise and street press (FPC Courier, 3D World, BMA, Inpress).

I present Canvas, an art/culture program, Sundays from 10am until noon on FBI 94.5. Before that I presented music program Join The Dots on FBI for over two years. Even earlier than that, I presented and produced Therapy, a weekly music program, on 2XX FM Canberra and syndicated nationally via the CBAA community radio network.

I’ve organised events at Newcastle’s This Is Not Art festival, the National Museum of Australia, the Metro (Sydney) and others. I’ve talked about music, media and events at Sound Summit, the Young Writers Festival, the Gold Coast City Council Cultural Summit and Vibewire’s New Connections conference.

I’m on the ARIA Awards and Dance Music Awards judging panels (though I’m pretty sure those votes are yet to propel a single artist into the hallowed fold).

I have DJed on and off for the past 13 years. Most recently, the Sydney Festival Beck’s Bar (download here), Apres (Tilbury Hotel, Sydney) and at magazine launches for Cyclic Defrost (Seymour Centre, Sydney) and Oyster (Oxford Art Factory, Sydney). I’ve recorded DJ sets for Triple J, PBS FM, Triple R, FBI and 2SER.

I’ve been a geologist, geophysicist and seismologist, and am now working in urban sustainability and communications.

I just wanted to let you know about my band High on Stress. We are from Minneapolis. I think there’s a possibility that you might like our stuff. Let me know if you would like me to send you an MP3 of a brand new song that is going to be on our album coming out at the end of the summer. If you like it please write about it. If you do not you can go ahead and delete it. Our influences include the Replacements, Josh Rouse, Ryan Adams, Jesse Malin and Wilco. Let me know if you have any interest and keep up the great work!

“High on Stress carry on in the grand tradition of Minneapolis music - great rock n’ roll with a rootsy slant; cheeky at times, consistently well written and played”
